Ferrari 575 Superamerica After a long absence, the V12 Ferrari convertible made its return with the limited-edition 550 Barchetta. It was a truly special car, but let’s be honest: not the most practical one. It only came with an emergency roof that limited you to 110 km/h, plus two Ferrari helmets. With the open version of the 575M, Ferrari took things several steps further. Once again, it had to be something unique, but this time, it also needed to be usable for the demanding customer who truly wanted to enjoy the GT character of the car. The Superamerica received an innovative yet simple-looking roof design: the roof rotates 180 degrees backward in just 7 seconds and rests on the (entirely carbon-made) boot lid. As a result, the roof doesn’t take up any luggage space, and the trunk remains fully accessible. Quite practical, then, for a Superamerica. This clever construction was designed by Leonardo Fioravanti, the man also responsible for the designs of the F40 and the Testarossa. What makes the Revocromico roof especially remarkable is the material used. The roof consists of a carbon-fiber frame with electrochromic glass, giving you that open-top feeling even when the roof is closed. Prefer not to have bright sunlight flooding the interior? No problem, the glass tint is adjustable. If desired, the roof can block up to 99% of sunlight. This system was also a world first on a production car. Under the long, elegant hood lies a true gem of an engine. The 5.75-liter V12 received modified intake and exhaust systems, resulting in even more power than the closed 575M. The additional 25 horsepower may sound modest, but the total output of 540 hp certainly is not. With an acceleration from 0–100 km/h in 4.2 seconds and a top speed of 325 km/h, it was, at the time, the fastest convertible on sale. Another nice detail is the asymmetrical body: an air intake on one side, and an aluminum fuel cap on the other. Like previous Ferraris bearing this name, the Superamerica was built in limited numbers: only 559 units were produced worldwide. It is further complemented by silver 19-inch BBS wheels and red brake calipers. A traditional Ferrari configuration that perfectly suits the character of the Superamerica and, for that very reason, remains particularly desirable among enthusiasts and collectors. One of the most important options on this example is the highly sought-after HGTC Handling Package, which gave the Superamerica a considerably sharper and more sporting character. The package includes carbon-ceramic brakes, a revised exhaust system, stiffer springs with 13 mm wire, upgraded dampers, a stiffer rear anti-roll bar and a revised F1 ECU for faster and sharper gear changes. The accompanying 19-inch BBS wheels were required to provide sufficient clearance for the larger carbon-ceramic braking system. Combined with the red brake calipers, they perfectly complement the Rosso Corsa bodywork, both technically and visually. Another particularly special feature is that the car is still accompanied by its original Ferrari carbon soft top. This was supplied from new with every Superamerica and was specifically designed to protect the unique glass Revocromico roof when it is in the open position. Although every Superamerica was originally delivered with this carbon soft top, it is exceptionally rare today to find one that is still complete with the car after more than twenty years. Of particular importance to the collectability of this example is its official Ferrari Classiche certification. As part of the certification process, the car is extensively examined by Ferrari, with its identity, technical specifications, key components and conformity with its original factory specification all being verified. The Classiche certification therefore provides important confirmation of the authenticity and originality of this Superamerica. In particular, it underlines the correctness and originality of the highly desirable HGTC Handling Package fitted to this example, an essential detail given the significant influence this specification has on the car’s desirability and collectability.
